Dont believe the downers!
I see nothing wrong with paying a little money for a truly great game, now made greater with updated textures, bot AI, guns (hehe) and a single player mode for the under-privaleged non LAN/online player. While playing counter strike I couldnt help feeling a distinct lack of explosions (in reference to the downer on rocket launchers). I have to remind you that these are (already proven) professional games designers. And the introduction of more power weapons, I think, should be welcomed. All weapons have an upside and a downside, a rocket launcher will be no exception! A rocket launcher will favour those more direct players (Quakers). But CS encourages so many types of play, people are forced to adapt to include different styles. I personally favour the super-sneaky-shadow-hiding-git tactics and the run-at-him-with-your-chib tactics as these provide the best entertainment and the most derisive insults from my victims... I mean friends. Weve enjoyed our free school meals for too long. I dont mind paying for a big juicy stake with blue cheese sauce, topped with a kebab and a haggis supper.... SO THERE!!!

Greatest Game Ever becomes greater!
So, youre worried they have ruined the true Counter-Strike feeling? Theyve not. Theyve made it 150 times more accessable, more fun and more detailed, but theyve not lost contact with what turned CS into the single most popular online game ever.

CS:CZ can be split into two halves - Online and Offline. Offline, there are missions, which envolve hostage rescue, bomb defusal, VIP defence and others. There is also Stimulated Multiplayer - bots to make it feel like youre playing online. Great if you dont have access or the money to play online.

But the real meaning of CS is when you connect to online servers and put bullets in your friends, and then rub it in again with a well timed grenade. Yes, you will have to put up with lag, but if you get yourself a nice connection, the world is your oyster.

I give this a nice 8/10 for offline play, and 11/10 for online. Yes, its that good.

Counter Strike: Condition Zero
Having got my eager and sweaty hands on a copy of the preview code of Gearboxs latest masterpiece, condition zero I couldnt wait to try it on my new homemade watercooled games machine.
Having installed the software and spent ages tweaking the games settings, I finally loaded it up and had a go. My initial impression was one of hey its counter strike but with guys in hockey masks no really, although not posessing cutting edge Doom 3 graphics the tweaked Half Life engine still has some mileage, the main improvement being that the guns dont have square barrels anymore. Another major change is that the game is now totally team oriented, and features a quite complicated interface to give orders to other members of the team. Which leads me to another major improvement. No longer do you have to install llama bot and watch your computer controlled opponents bunnyhop into walls, the AI opponents are almost indistinguishable from the real thing, and more than match for all but the most hardened geeks. The final addition has been Guns, lots of guns! instead of using that 9mm pea-shooter
you can now blast away with a 66mm LAW anti tank weapon (kinda like an RPG for those who havent read Tom Clancy). The beta code plays somewhat like a mix of the original CS, Operation Flashpoint and Project IGI which is no bad thing. Sadly however, Randy Pitchfords much talked about interactive scripted sequences are not in the preview code, but if they are as good as the rest of the game, then its a sure winner. Bring on Half Life 2!
